Represent magazine, which showcases the voices of youth in foster care, published a story by Marlo Scott, our 2015 Media for a Just Society Award winner in the youth media category. His piece, “My Looking-Glass Self,” gives the audience a look at Marlo’s struggles in college to create a new self-concept as a successful accounting student, after a childhood where he had to create “thug cred”
and stick up for himself after his mother died and the family was “in and out of shelters.” The author narrates his journey through his early college experiences, describing changes “inside and out” that he realized he wanted to make so that “society, in turn, no longer [viewed him] as a liability but rather as a long-term asset.”
