What happens to kids who are kicked out of each and every school in their area? Thankfully for Chicago’s West Side, there is a school for the city’s most at-risk youth—the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been expelled from other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders. Most school districts don’t have any infrastructure to serve these children; it’s an incredibly tough job that can often seem impossible. We get a look inside Montefiore’s classrooms in Last Chance High—and we also get a brief look into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital. This eight-part original VICE News series, winner of the 2015 Media for a Just Society Award in the TV/video category, introduces us to a handful of kids as they struggle to stay in Montefiore, their last chance at a life outside of the justice system.
