Ta-Nehisi Coates

Ta-Nehisi Coates makes the case for the United States to “reckon with our compounding moral debts” in order to move forward. Coates, winner of the 2015 Media for a Just Society Award in the print/online journalism—longform category, looks at the entire timeline of the African American experience: 250 years of slavery, 90 years of Jim Crow, 60 years of separate but equal, and 35 years of racist housing policy. This important article gives new context to the issues our society is dealing with today, namely how to “repay” African Americans for a system of institutional racism that has robbed them of wealth and success for generations.

The New York Observer calls Coates “the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States.” Coates is the author, most recently, of Between the World and Me, the #1 New York Times bestseller that “will be hailed as a classic of our time” (Publishers Weekly) and which Toni Morrison calls “required reading.” Coates received the Hillman Prize for Opinion and Analysis Journalism in 2012 and was named a 2015 MacArthur “Genius” fellow.
