New Initiative Seeks to Keep Juveniles Out of Trouble by Keeping Them Out of Jail

Philadelphia has been selected to participate in the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative, which uses juvenile detention only for high risk offenders and employs methods of restorative justice, such as youth advocacy groups and family conferences, to keep kids out of detention facilities.
Philadelphia has been selected to participate in the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative, which uses juvenile detention only for high risk offenders and employs methods of restorative justice, such as youth advocacy groups and family conferences, to keep kids out of detention facilities. The sixteen counties that are using this type of detention alternative have saved an estimated $16 million annually, as the average cost for detaining a youth offender is $700 a day.
