Fruitvale Station Honored With NCCD’s 2014 Distinguished Achievement Award

We are pleased to announce that Fruitvale Station, the highly acclaimed film from writer/director Ryan Coogler, is the winner of the Distinguished Achievement Award in Film this year as part of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency’s Media for a Just Society Awards. Mr. Coogler and other members of the Fruitvale Station cast and production team will accept this award at a ceremony on the evening of October 15, 2014, at the spectacular San Francisco Jazz Center.

The 2014 Media for a Just Society Awards presentation promises to be a powerful and inspiring event. We will celebrate winners in eight additional categories including book, film, TV/video, radio, magazine, newspaper, web, and a brand-new youth media category. These winners, to be announced in September, will be chosen by an eminent panel of guest judges who will also attend the event. See photos from last year’s awards event here.

The Media for a Just Society Awards are the only national recognition of media whose work furthers public understanding of criminal justice, juvenile justice, child welfare, and adult protection issues. In a Huffington Post op-ed, NCCD President Alex Busansky writes:

Journalists bear enormous power to remedy social injustice. They speak on behalf of those who do not have a microphone, a platform, or a podium, telling the stories of people impacted by the social and cultural challenges that we do not want to face but desperately need to fix. … [NCCD] honors those journalists, filmmakers, and creators who give the silent a voice with our Media for a Just Society Awards.
