For Oakland Youth, Filmmaking Aids in Coping with Crime

Through collaborations with Kaiser Permanente, NCCD, and other organizations, The Spot, a youth center in Chinatown, put cameras and video editing software in the hands of young men who wouldn’t normally have the chance to express themselves creatively.
Through collaborations with Kaiser Permanente, NCCD, and other organizations, The Spot, a youth center in Chinatown, put cameras and video editing software in the hands of young men who wouldn’t normally have the chance to express themselves creatively. An audience of about 100 crowded around a projector on Wednesday June 20, 2012 at The Spot’s headquarters to watch four mini-documentaries which ranged from short skits to introspective interviews with Oakland residents about their thoughts on drug use and gangs.
