The 2013 Media for a Just Society Awards: A Look Back (With Photos!)

“A story has to be told and it has to be told accurately. What NCCD is doing—and especially those of you who are getting awards today—is telling the behind-the-curtain story; you are telling the public the truth. “
—George Gascón, San Francisco District Attorney, at the 2013 Media for a Just Society Awards

Foundation and business leaders, attorneys, community members, and other guests convened at the W San Francisco Hotel on October 2 to honor the winners of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency’s Media For a Just Society Awards, the only national recognition of media whose work furthers public understanding of criminal justice, juvenile justice, child welfare, and adult protection issues.
NCCD President Alex Busansky welcomed guests by highlighting the purpose of the Media for a Just Society Awards. “We are gathered to recognize the media’s essential role in telling the stories that the public—and the policy makers—need to hear.” For a complete list of this year’s Media for a Just Society Award winners and links to their work, click here.
Andrew Solomon, author of Far From the Tree, received NCCD’s first-ever Distinguished Achievement Award in Nonfiction and spoke about the stigmas faced by families of people who have committed crimes. “I think a criminal justice system that understands the complexities of family relations becomes a more just, more generous, and a more effective system” said Solomon. “The work that NCCD is doing will help us to build a system that conforms to all of these adjectives.” (Click to hear Solomon’s appearances on Michael Krasny’s Forum and on NPR’s Fresh Air.)
Thank you to all who attended this event. We would also like to extend a very special thanks to our board of directors as well as our 2013 Media for a Just Society Awards sponsors and honorary committee, whose investments of time and resources made this celebration possible.
Mark your calendars for October 2014! We are already looking forward to sharing the 2014 Media for a Just Society Awards with you. Look for more information in the new year.
