Imperial Dreams, Malik Vitthal’s directorial debut, brings us the incredible story of Bambi, a young father who returns to his neighborhood of Watts in Los Angeles after more than two years in prison. He tries to put his life back in order while negotiating the barriers that exist for formerly incarcerated black men in America. The film follows his journey as he tries to provide for his four-year-old son without resorting to crime, despite being presented with many criminal opportunities. Imperial Dreams, the 2015 Media for a Just Society Award winner in the film category, gives us a small window into the nuanced struggles of a situation hundreds of thousands of people face in our country.

Malik Vitthal graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Vitthal was selected to represent the United States as a three-time delegate to the World Youth Conference for Peace in India. Vitthal co-wrote and directed Imperial Dreams, his feature directorial debut, which was developed at the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab and the Jerusalem International Film Lab.

Imperial Dreams won the Best of NEXT Sundance Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and has garnered great reviews from many media outlets. It is showing around the country and at film festivals.
