What is best practice in domestic violence cases when in-person contact between practitioners and families is limited? How do professionals address an epidemic of violence—already hidden from public view—when victims are in isolation due to a public health crisis? Child welfare workers are struggling with assessing safety and engaging family members in situations where domestic violence survivors may be trapped in their home with the perpetrator.

Using the principles of family-centered and domestic violence-informed practice, David Mandel, Executive Director and Founder of the Safe & Together Institute; and Heather Meitner, Child Welfare Practice and Team Decision Making Manager for NCCD Children’s Research Center, will share practice considerations and strategies related to remote engagement and assessment. This webinar will include practical suggestions around family networks, scripts for engagement, and how to improve the use of prior history to fine-tune your approach to families. Tips for addressing the intersection of complicating factors like substance abuse and mental health issues also will be shared.
