NCCD has been an expert in risk assessment for decades, across multiple human service systems. Risk assessment is a valuable and crucial tool to support equitable and consistent decisions in many human services systems. But there are important caveats that we should all be aware of, particularly around using risk assessment in adult corrections.
NCCD strongly supports the use of risk assessment to positively affect people and communities, and vehemently opposes using it to distribute punishment. This perspective is based on evidence. In the criminal justice system, research has shown that harsher punishments and longer sentences—which would be the result of being designated “high risk” in the correctional system—do not increase public safety or decrease crime. The perspective also aligns with our mission: NCCD promotes just and equitable social systems for individuals, families, and communities through research, public policy, and practice.
