Filmmakers, writers, journalists, and other members of the media help shape public understanding and public outrage. They help humanize, organize, and realize change.

This is why NCCD has long recognized outstanding portrayals of the systems we work in and the people whose lives they touch with the Media for a Just Society Awards. These awards honor members of the media whose work furthers justice and social change in the areas NCCD works in, telling the stories the world needs to hear. Our guest judges chose winners in seven categories: book, film, TV/video, radio, print/online journalism (longform and shortform), and youth media.

Our winners this year include Reginald Dwayne Betts’ Bastards of the Reagan Era, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” and This American Life’s “The Problem We All Live With.” Click here for a full list of winners.

Over the next several weeks, we will feature blog posts by our winners and finalists about their work and the stories they want us to hear. Come back frequently. And don’t forget, you can register to attend the NCCD Conference on Children, Youth, and Families to attend the presentation of the Distinguished Achievement Award to Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi, creators of Netflix’s Making a Murderer.

Congratulations to this year’s winners on their achievements and the important work they do to create the just and equitable society we all deserve!
